Jesus: The Promised Seed of David

Length: 10 minutes

In the previous lesson, we got to understand that our Lord about Jesus is the seed promised to Abraham. In our lesson today, we will look at the man and king David. God promised him a seed or offspring. I will start with the very interesting story of David.

This man king David loved God so much that once upon a time, he built a big mansion for himself, but when he moved his properties to this new Palace, he felt guilty in his heart. He felt he should also build a house or a temple for God.

As David had these thoughts, God sent Nathan the prophet to deliver a message to king David. This message has become eternal and recounted throughout the pages of the whole scripture. I will stop telling you the story here. Please open your Bible let’s see the heart warming prophecy:

The Promise…

“12 When your days are fulfilled, and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

13 He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

2 Samuel 7:12-13

Wow! God promised David here an everlasting dynasty! All I can say is wow! But who is this seed of David that will reign in David’s throne forever?

Now let’s bring out the key words as we did in the promise to Abraham.

1. Seed

2. Kingdom

3. Forever

Jesus: The seed of David

So who’s this SEED? Once again I will let only the Bible answer.

1,000 years later, God sent His angel, Gabriel to go down to the land of Israel and meet a young virgin called Mary. Here is the words of the angel:

30 The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and shall name him ‘Jesus.’

32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,

33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.”

Luke 1:30-33

Now you will notice that the message of Gabriel to Mary contains the same message God sent Nathan to give to David, isn’t it?

Paul referred to this same message as the summary of the gospel:

“Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:”

2Timothy 2:8 KJV

The Kingdom

Just like in the promise to Abraham we now identify the seed of David as Jesus Christ! Hallelujah!

David’s kingdom was in Jerusalem, here on earth, so the kingdom of God to come will be here in earth ? from Jerusalem. Just as every administration have a capital territory, just like Abuja is the Federal Capital territory of Nigeria, Jerusalem in Israel will be the seat of the kingdom of God when it is established.

The kingdom of God is not going to be in heaven but here on earth from Jerusalem!

This is the gospel and prophet Isaiah prophesied 600 years before the birth of Christ.

6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”

Isaiah 9:6,7

Hallelujah!

So the seed of Abraham = seed of David = Our lord and savior Jesus Christ!

Is this not why the very first words of the new Testament opened with these gracious words? :

Mat 1:1 “This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”
