Jesus: The Promised Seed of Abraham

Length: 10 minutes

Jesus as the promised seed of Abraham

The gospel is not complete without an understanding of God’s plan for the world right from the creation. Our Lord Jesus Christ has been in God’s plan from the beginning.

Today we shall take a look at Jesus as the promised seed of Abraham. Please bring out your Bible as we study.

Now let’s start with a story, story of Abraham. God called out Abraham from Ur of Chaldea now in Iraq. He left all that he had and traveled with Lot, the son of his brother. God saw his faith and God decided to bless him. Please open your Bible and let’s see the blessing.

1 Now the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, and your relatives, and your father’s house, and go to the land that I will show you.

2 I will make of you a great nation. I will bless you and make your name great. You will be a blessing.

3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who treats you with contempt. All the families of the earth will be blessed in you.

Genesis 12:1-3

Now take a look at verse 3 again. It says all families of the earth will be blessed in Abraham. How possible is this? How can Nigerians, Europeans, Asians and everyone be blessed in Abraham?

The Gospel was preached to Abraham!

Could you believe that the gospel was preached to Abraham long before our Lord Jesus Christ was born? Paul the apostle, citing Genesis 12:3 clearly told us that God actually preached the gospel to Abraham in that passage. He wrote:

And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify[c] the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.

Galatians 3:8

How is this really the gospel? You will see it for yourself, read on.

Now fast-forward to Genesis 13. God spoke to Abraham again, this time saying:

14 The LORD said to Abram, after Lot was separated from him, “Now, lift up your eyes, and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward,

15 for I will give all the land which you see to you and to your seed forever.

Genesis 13:14-15

Here we see 3 key words…

1. All the land

2. Seed

3. Forever

Now Abraham was childless at this stage. So we ask 3 questions

1. What is the boundary of the land promised?

2. Who is this SEED?

3. How can Abraham and his seed inherit this land forever?

Who is the Seed of Abraham?

First of all let’s start from the seed? Who is this SEED? Isaac? Israel? Or another person?

I will not answer this question, let the Bible answer it. Let us go to Galatians 3:16

16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to seeds,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your seed,” who is Christ.

Galatians 3:16

Wow, so the promise God made to Abraham was actually to him and to Jesus? So Jesus is the promised seed of Abraham!

It will all make sense. Just read on.

What Land was promised to Abraham?

Let’s look at the LAND. How big will the land be? Just the land of Canaan? Or somewhere else? Once again let’s allow the Bible to answer this. Let’s look at Romans 4:13

For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Romans 4:13

Here we see our 3 key words again but this time we learn that Abraham was actually promised the whole world!

Forever!

So it’s clear that God promised Abraham and Jesus /seed the whole land or the world! Now the spiritual significance of this story is becoming clearer. But wait a minute, he was promised also to inherit this FOREVER. Forever? Let’s look at it.

Now this means that Abraham and Jesus his seed or offspring, will have to live forever for them to inherit the world forever. This means that even if Abraham or Jesus Christ died, they would rise again to live forever. Wow! So much in a simple promise!

Now let’s go back to Galatians 3:8 and read again with this better understanding:

And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify[c] the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.

Galatians 3:8

So far here is the summary of this great gospel first proclaimed to Abraham :

1. Abraham will inherit the whole earth

2. His seed Jesus Christ will be the heir or KING of this new world.

So the kingdom of God, once it comes will cover the whole earth and Jesus will be the ruler of that coming kingdom of God on earth! Wow! Is this not why we are asked to pray

“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth ? as it is in heaven”?

How can you take part in this blessings or gospel preached to Abraham?

This is not just about Abraham and his seed: Jesus Christ. It is also about you! It is the desire of the almighty God to also give you Abraham’s blessings! How? Please let’s read the concluding part of Galatians 3 and see how you can also be part of this precious promise.

” 26 For in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God through faith.

27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female – for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.

29 And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to the promise.”

Galatians 3:26-29

Please read it again if you don’t understand it.

Believe and be Baptised!

For anyone to inherit the whole earth and reign with Jesus forever, that person must believe in Jesus Christ and this message of a coming kingdom of God on earth. After this, that person must be baptised into the saving name of Jesus Christ! The scripture is saying that if you believe this gospel and you are baptised into Jesus Christ, you’ll be in Christ who is Abraham’s seed and heir according to the promise.

This is all God is asking you to do. believe in the one true gospel preached to Abraham which is made clearer to us by the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and be baptised in order to be saved!

What a wonderful promise. The next lesson on the seed of David is even more exciting!
