So let’s talk about God. Who is God? This is a hard question to answer but God has revealed Himself to us through His Word that is the Bible and especially through our Lord Jesus Christ who is the word of God made flesh.
We can not know enough of God but we continue to learn everyday. Some of the things we know for sure is that :
- God is the creator of everything.
1 The earth is Yahweh’s, with its fullness; the world, and those who dwell in it. 2 For he has founded it on the seas, and established it on the floods.
Psalm 24:1-2
- God is almighty. He has no equal and needs no one to complement Him.
5 For though there are things that are called “gods”, whether in the heavens or on earth; as there are many “gods” and many “lords”; 6 yet to us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, for whom are all things, and we live through him.
1Corinthians 8:5-6
- God loves his creation.
Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
Matthew 18:14
So what do these mean to us as Bible believers?
God is the creator: There is nothing or no one – human or angel that was not created by God.
God is almighty: This second point is even more striking and often misunderstood. A lot of people think that God is more powerful than other gods, No! Other gods are NO God in the first place. All power belongs to God. God knows and allows both the good and evil that befall His people. True children of God give God the glory in ALL SITUATION.
Let’s see how God revealed Himself through the prophet Isaiah. Read especially verse 7.
5 I am Yahweh, and there is no one else. Besides me, there is no God. I will strengthen you, though you have not known me,
6 that they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is no one besides me. I am Yahweh, and there is no one else.
7 I form the light and create darkness. I make peace and create calamity. I am Yahweh, who does all these things.
Isaiah 45:5-7
So we must understand that the Almighty God is in control of every thing and there is no one else or no other god beside Him.
What does this mean to you as a believer?
You have to believe with all your heart that there is only one God. He is the God that is revealed in the Bible. Your faith and conviction in the existence of this only living God of the Bible is the basis for your salvation. This means that you should not in any way pay homage to the gods of other religions that is not the God of the Bible. You must not pray or sacrifice to them or attempt to consult them in any way. Because they are no gods.
The commandment of God says:
3“You shall have no other gods before me.
4“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
Exodus 20:3-4
Since God is the creator of everything, why should you worship the creature instead of the creator? You must not also sacrifice to trees, rivers, thunders, carved woods and all manner of idols. Your homage and reverence must be to God alone, with all your heart!
