Revelation 8: The 7th seal and 7 Trumpets

Now as we explained in chapter 6, the Day of the Lord or the judgement day of the World by the Lord began in the days of the 6th seal, Revelation 6:17. The saints witnessed the beginning of this shaking of the political heavens and earth as we have shown, but they were soon cut off from the turbulent earth as we have shown and as we saw in the sealing of the symbolic 144,000 in Revelation 7.

7th Seal = 7 Trumpets

Now in the 7th seal, we have the 7 Trumpets of the 7 angels who stand before God.

7th Seal

7 Trumpets

The Symbolism of Trumpet in the scriptures

Throughout the Bible, the sounding of the Trumpet or the Shofar is usually a call to war and destruction, to assemble or to march to a place. In the New Testament, our Lord used the sounding of the Trumpet to indicate the assembling of the living and dead saints to meet with their Lord on the last day. But from the contents of the 7 Trumpets under consideration, it is obvious that it speaks of a time people are summoned to meet the Lord or for war, destruction, and the judgement of the wicked world by the Lord. See Matthew 24:30,31; Exodus 19:13,16; Zechariah 9:14,15; etc.

This gives me great confidence in our interpretation which maintains that this period, pertains to the future judgement day of the world after the saints must have been taken by the Lord or sealed after the great tribulation, using the more accurate Revelation terminology.

Most importantly in our interpretation of the 7 Trumpets is the fact that the imagery is taken from the sounding of 7 Trumpets in the days of Joshua when they marched against Jericho:

Joshua 6:2-5Revelation 8:1-5
Jos 6:2 And the LORD said to Joshua, “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.  Jos 6:3 You shall march around the city, all the men of war going around the city once. Thus shall you do for six days.  Jos 6:4 Seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. On the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.  Jos 6:5 And when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, when you hear the sound of the trumpet, then all the people shall shout with a great shout, and the wall of the city will fall down flat, and the people shall go up, everyone straight before him.” Rev 8:1 When the Lamb opened the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.  Rev 8:2 Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.  Rev 8:3 And another angel came and stood at the altar with a golden censer, and he was given much incense to offer with the prayers of all the saints on the golden altar before the throne,  Rev 8:4 and the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of the saints, rose before God from the hand of the angel.  Rev 8:5 Then the angel took the censer and filled it with fire from the altar and threw it on the earth, and there were peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

We are privileged to learn from this holy book, the plan of God and how He wants to judge the world. This should have been none of our business, but it shows that God has indeed called us to be part of His plan and His purpose on earth. We are dearly loved by God and He wants us to be well aware of His plans. Amos tells us that the Lord will inform His servants before blowing a trumpet!

“6 Is a trumpet blown in a city, and the people are not afraid? Does disaster come to a city, unless the LORD has done it? 7 “For the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets.”” Amos 3:6,7.

This also reassures us that we are of the seed of Abraham and God values us so much even as He loved Abraham. When the Lord was about to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah, we read of the discussion of the angels about how much information Abraham ought to know with regards to his closeness to God:

“16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way. 17 The LORD said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice, so that the LORD may bring to Abraham what he has promised him.” Genesis 8:16-19 cf. Romans 8:29,30.

“18 For through him we both have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” Ephesians 2:18,19.

“9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.” 1 Peter 2:9,10.

Praise be to the Lord God of hosts, who have chosen us in Christ His son, and who considers us worthy to know His plans as revealed in this book of prophecy sent to John His servant, amen.
