Did Jesus preexist before Abraham?

First of all, God calls Jesus His Son, and Jesus calls Him Father. We even read that Jesus is the firstborn of all creation in Colossians 1:15. Mary also, is truly the biological mother of Jesus, not some kind of surrogate. Through Mary, Jesus is genuinely the descendant of David, Abraham, and even Adam.

The idea that Mary is the “mother of God” would have been considered blasphemy in the days of the apostles, because the Almighty God is never described as having a mother—under any circumstance whatsoever—or as reducing Himself to a fetus, to be born and breastfed by a human.

Jesus is literally the Son of God because He has no biological father; God formed Him in Mary’s womb without the assistance of any man.

As for the phrase “Before Abraham was, I am…”—John begins, in John 1:1, by personifying the spoken word of God. He follows a familiar pattern in the Old Testament, where the Word of God is described as though it were separate from God Himself. For example, we read that “the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah/Ezekiel…” as though God’s word had legs and could walk. God Himself also separates His word from Himself here:

Isaiah 55:11 — “So is My word that goes out from My mouth: it will not return to Me void, but it will accomplish what I please, and it will prosper in the thing I sent it to do.”

But John clarifies that this Word of God is not different from God—it is, in fact, God. God’s Word is God. Then in John 1:14, this same Logos, or Word of God, was made flesh. This happened when the angel Gabriel spoke this Word to the young Jewish virgin, and she became pregnant without meeting a man.

This means that before Jesus existed as a person, He was the Word of God. He was real in God’s mind and thoughts. He was the promised Messiah, and even before Abraham, He was this promised Messiah.

In the Old Testament, we only heard the Word of the Lord through the prophets. But in the New Testament, the apostles could now see and even touch this Word of God—in the man, Jesus Christ.

1Jn 1:1 “That which was from the beginning, that which we have heard, that which we have seen with our eyes, that which we saw, and our hands touched, concerning the Word of life”.
