The New Testament began with a declaration that Jesus is the son of David. Interestingly, Jesus closed the Book of Revelation by declaring himself to be the root and offspring of David, Rev 22:16. Why is this important?
David loved God so much that once upon a time, he built a big mansion for himself, but when he moved his properties to this new Palace, he felt guilty in his heart. He felt he should also build a house for God.
As David had these thoughts, God sent Nathan the prophet to deliver a message to king David.
2Sa 7:12-13
“12 When your days are fulfilled, and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will proceed out of your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.”
God promised David here an everlasting dynasty! But who is this seed of David that will reign on David’s throne forever?
Now let’s bring out the key words as we did in the promise to Abraham.
1. Seed
2. Kingdom
3. Forever
So, who’s this SEED? Once again, I will let only the Bible answer.
1,000 years later, God sent His angel, Gabriel to go down to the land of Israel and meet a young virgin called Mary. Here are the words of the angel:
Luke 1:30-33
30 The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and shall name him ‘Jesus.’
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,
33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.”
Now you will notice that the message of Gabriel to Mary is the same message God sent Nathan to give to David, isn’t it? Are you with me?
Paul referred to this as the summary of the gospel:
2Ti 2:8 KJV “Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:”
Just like in the promise to Abraham we now identify the seed of David as Jesus Christ! Hallelujah!
David’s kingdom was in Jerusalem, here on earth, so the kingdom of God to come will be here in earth ? from Jerusalem. The kingdom of God is not going to be heaven but here on earth from Jerusalem!
This is the gospel and prophet Isaiah prophesied 600 years before the birth of Christ
Isa 9:6-7 KJV
6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”
Hallelujah!
So the seed of Abraham = seed of David = Our lord and saviour Jesus Christ!
Is this not why the very first words of the new Testament opened with these gracious words? :
Mat 1:1 “This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”
So, if you have faith, you simply have to believe in this coming kingdom of God on earth with Jesus as it’s king. The original gospel Jesus and the apostles preached centered on Jesus and this coming kingdom of God. In this kingdom, there will be no pain, sorrow and death.
